MILOS POPOVIC

This is the autobiography of Milos (The Priest) Popovic:

I was born 27th of October, 1991, in Belgrade. My parents quickly divorced, so I grew up with my mother, grandmother and grandfather in one of the worst parts of town, Dorcol. I lived with my mother in a 15 square meter room for 10 years. Most of my time, I spent with my grandmother and grandfather, because my mother was working two jobs, and everything I know today, I learned from them, and from the streets of Belgrade.

At the age of 12, I was the best pupil in my school, making straight A`s in every subject, started training basketball, also staying late on the corners of my hood, doing all kinds of stupid things with my friends every night. I had some Chinese electric piano at home, so every day I tried to play something, just for fun. My grandmother wanted to sing me up in the Stakovic music school, to play classical guitar, but she missed the date. At that time, I could not believe in my wildest dreams that I will make a band with people from that school.

I finished my regular school with no problems, and started one of the hardest High Schools in the town, The Fifth Belgrade High School. I quit playing basketball, after 6 years. I realized I had a lot of spare time, but nothing to do with it. Through the years, my father was always around. He lived in Belgrade, also. Every time I went to see him, he would play me some rock and metal music. I hated it. It was too loud for me, I said to him every time he wanted to play some more. He played the guitar a few times at some parties, so we learned a couple of songs together, he would play and I would sing. But still, I had no special interest in music.

That all changed when I heard Pantera, Cowboys from Hell album. I had never imagined anything like that before. In my first year in High School, Immediately, I got a leather jacket, a pair of Shelly’s and  I was a metalhead in a minute, or at least I looked like one.

Now, all my spare time, which was all the time because I wasn’t studying anything, was in listening and listening and listening to metal music. Every weekend I went to a gig, listening to Megadeth cover bands, Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Machine Head, Sepultura hits that pounded on my head like a hammer. Then I asked my father to get me an acoustic guitar, and so he did, saying it was a matter of time. He was never pushy about the music and playing an instrument, so he let me decide whether it was time or not, whether I wanted that or not. So, now my time from listening, went to playing the guitar. I played for 6 hours a day, making my mother crazy. We moved from our old apartment, and started living with my mother’s boyfriend, Vladan. Every weekend I went with Vladan to the Student Cultural Centre, where we bought all kinds of bootleg editions of music. From Miles Davis to ACDC, over to Massive Attack and The Sex Pistols.

Then, it was time for my first band. Actually, a duo. I started playing with my friend Pavle, in the basement of his grandmother`s house. He played guitar much better than I, so I started to sing, and for 30 or 40 days we had rehearsals every day. We made a couple of bad songs, then stopped doing that because my grades, and especially Pavle`s, were not doing very well.

After a few months, Pavle asked me to join his band, which was playing some ACDC, Nirvana, Black Sabbath and so on. I went to a studio, and from all the songs they played I only knew TNT, from ACDC. I sang it the best I could, and they were amazed. So we started playing in clubs all over town, but I had a feeling that this band is not the right one for me. I wanted to do something harder, something more aggressive, something like the music I had listened to.

That band disbanded, so I was back to the same old playing home for 5 hours, still making my mother crazy, now even more, because I had borrowed an electric guitar from my friend. It was a Fender. I learned to play about 40 songs and my pride and joy was Holy Wars from Megadeth. At the time, there weren’t a lot of a fifteen year olds who could do that in town. Or so I thought. Later, Pavle asked me to join some other band with him. I was excited as hell.

I went to the house where they told me the rehearsal would be at. There I meet Mike (lead guitar). The rehearsal was one of the worst I have ever experienced. Nobody knew the songs, everybody was shouting at each other, but I could feel the energy flowing, I knew It was right.  Then we started playing Pantera, Megadeth and Metallica songs and we did that for a year.

Numerous band member changes were made, and with the right crew we started playing in Belgrade. After a few months, we started to look like a band, feel like a band but not sound like a band, because we only played cover songs. We were the best Pantera tribute in the country, but still something was missing.

We recorded our first demo in the same studio where we all met. It had 3 songs and it was recorded in two days. Again, some band members left, some members came, but we all knew that the only thing we needed were some new songs and better recording conditions.

Then, I met Damian (bass) and we asked him to join the band, because we were sick of some band members not working as hard as everybody else did. Also, Joey (drums) was on the drums instead of our previous drummer. For six months we tried making some new songs, and we recorded them at Mike`s house, in a home studio.

I enrolled in college and started studying world literature at the University of Belgrade. I found out about this guy, Milos Mihajlovic, and his studio in New Belgrade. I went there, listened to some tracks that he had recorded so far and I was stunned. We raised the money for the recording, and started in early August. We recorded an album in 110 hours, the atmosphere was perfect, we all had an unforgettable time. After that, things just went through the roof for us. We started playing larger shows, competitions outside of the country, we started playing our own songs and the people were totally digging us.

To me, this is not just a band (Dot The Eye), but a special kind of family. There is no better feeling than making and playing music with your best friends.
